Thirty beds. Every night. For anyone who needs one.
The Salvation Army shelter in Gadsden has 24 beds for men, 6 for women, and a family unit the community helped build. Guests come in at 5:00 PM, sit down to dinner, sleep somewhere warm and safe, and eat breakfast before heading out to look for work.
Keeping those doors open takes money every single night. So on November 20, we're asking Gadsden to spend one night on the sidewalk outside, and raise what it takes to keep the beds inside full.
Green: 24 men's beds. Gold: 6 women's beds. Plus a family unit.

Questions
Who can sleep out?
Anyone 12 or older. Sleepers under 18 need a parent or guardian registered and sleeping beside them, and both sign the waiver.
What should I bring?
A cold-rated sleeping bag, a pad or cardboard, a pillow, warm layers, hat and gloves, rain gear, a flashlight, any medicines you need, and a water bottle. Please leave tents, heaters, open flames, alcohol, and pets at home (service animals welcome).
What if it's too cold or rainy?
We make a go or no-go call by noon on event day and post it here and on Facebook. If conditions turn dangerous overnight, everyone moves indoors. The backup date is Friday, December 4.
Is it safe?
The block is closed to traffic, lit, and staffed all night, with first aid, a warming room, and restrooms. You check in and out so we always know who's on the street, and you can leave anytime.
Will I meet shelter guests?
Guests come in at 5:00 PM as usual. Please respect their privacy: no photos of guests, and stay out of the building unless staff invite you in.
Isn't this pretending to be homeless?
No. One night with a sleeping bag and breakfast waiting is nothing like homelessness. The night is about solidarity, learning, and raising real money for people who need a bed tomorrow night too.
Can I just give instead?
Yes. Sponsor a sleeper or give to the event directly. Gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law, and proceeds support The Salvation Army shelter at 114 N. 11th St., Gadsden.
Claim your spot on the sidewalk.
Sleep out, bring a team, or back someone who will. Thirty beds are counting on it.
Online sign-up opens soon. Until then, call The Salvation Army at (256) 546-4673 to register or give.
